I've had conversations with people where they would call veganism unreasonable, strict, extreme, or straight up stupid. I prefer to call it something else – morally consistent.
Everyone I know says they're against animal abuse.
People would bawl their eyes out for animals abused in animal testing, while eating a ham and cheese sandwich.
People would call keeping a dog in a kennel throughout their entire life cruel, but don't care when it happens to hens or pigs.
People know about how "humane slaughter" standards are not being enforced, yet continue to eat meat.
People will say that it's not instilling cognitive dissonance in children to tell them to eat meat when they love animals, yet will get upset if said children get educated on where the meat comes from and want to stop doing so.
It's illegal to mutilate puppies by cutting their ears or tails, but no-one cares about sheep or piglets.
It's considered cruel to take a puppy or a kitten away from its mother before a certain age, but no-one cares about piglets or calves.
I get that people don't have the knowledge of how those practices really look like. I myself had been eating meat for most of my life, because I believed the myth of humane slaughter, standards, or I just didn't know how certain practices look like. I know how difficult it is to stomach the realization of years of abuse that I had contributed to. I would just prefer not being called stupid over a set of morally consistent choices.
